In the year 2015, the remnants of humanity cower in subterranean cities, while a deadly war is being waged over what is left of the planet after the Second Impact. The mysterious beings known as 'Angels' that enacted the Second Impact fight with what are left of Earth's defenses on the surface. As the Earth's last defense against them, the special agency NERV has created the Evangelions, bio-mechanical humanoids. These are the only thing Humanity has that can withstand the power of the Angel's Absolute Terror Field long enough to destroy it. With the only option being hand to hand combat, a special team of young warrior have been selected. One catch; Only those born 9 months after the Second Impact that occured 15 years earlier can synchronize enough with the Eva Units to pilot them.
Characters
A mysterious, quiet girl that is the First Child Eva Pilot. She lives in an apartment on her own, and seems to be emotionless at all times. Gendo Ikari, the Commander over NERV has a strange connection with her, treating her as if she was his own child. No one really knows anything about Rei's past.
A coward by heart, after his mother died, he was practically abandoned by his father--and the leader of the NERV--Gendo Ikari who now seems to like Rei Ayanami more than him. Having enough of a struggle through life itself, he has the weight of the survival of his race on his shoulders as the Second Child Eva Pilot. Living with his guardian Misato isn't easy either, and working in the same place as her is even worse. Not to mention that knowing all of her personal habits and idiosynchronse makes him seem weird for being the only guy that doesn't think she's hot.
The German Eva Pilot and Third Child, she makes Shinji's life a living hell. Arrogant, condescending, and generally mean, she ends up living under Misato also. She constantly picks on Shinji and gloats about her piloting skills, Rei isn't much better off, but really doesn't care at all. Asuka blames Shinji for practically everything that has gone wrong, and that goes wrong. She thinks it's a sin that two unrelated children over the age of twelve are living under the same roof, and blames Shinji for that also.
Major Misato Kusanagi is one of the ones in charge of NERV and the Eva Project, she also takes most of the heat from mistakes in plans that cause damage to the city. She also is the guardian of Shinji Ikari and Asuka Sohryo, meaning she has to put up with them also.
Ritsuko is one of the scientists at NERV, and one of the only one that fully understands the supercomputer her mother created for NERV referred to as the 'MAGI.'

My Thought:
For the most part, I found this an very excellent excuse for an anime. Deep story, interesting characters, make that a mind twisting story. So many elements from the Christian Bible are in it, it's almost scary. All around good anime for me.
